Fujitsu Qualifier
11th Fujitsu Qualifier: Dec. 8, 1997 San Francico, CA
Michael Redmond, 8-Dan defeated Jimmy Cha, 4-Dan in the final game of the Fujitsu Qualifying tournament and will be the North American representative to the 11th Fujitsu World Championship of Go. The tournament had one of the strongest fields to date. Third seeded was Janice Kim, 1-Dan. Other professional players in attendance were Kim Hak Soo, 6-Dan and James Kerwin, 1-Dan. Also in attendance were the current US Open Champion Thomas Hsiang and runner up Edward Kim.
Perrenial west coast favorites Kim Woo Jin, Yi Ho Suk, and Ned Phipps were on hand as was a well known Central Region player, Joseph Wang of Texas. Two young contestants who continue to push at the top level of American amateur Go are Yuan Zhou and James Chien. Rounding out the tournament were Xin Wei and Joonki Beck from Canada and Juan Rivaud from Mexico.
After the top two places, were Kim Hak Soo, 6-Dan, Yi Ho Suk, and Thomas Hsiang all with records of 3 and 1.
The representive for the Fujitsu Corporation was Fujisawa Yoshihiro, a strong amateur player, whose father is legendary Fujisawa Shuko, 9-Dan.
