Black's response to the marked play?
Analysis:

An improvement on one of the book's kyu level tsumego problems?!
You decide.
Solution follows
(or click here to download SGF)
Sub-optimal book line?
Black 1 is the only line the book gives.
But through 6, Black takes a big 20 point loss by
letting go of the 4 stones above.
See the SGF for many other lines for this entire problem.
Better for Black?
The book doesn't show the more interesting defense at 1,
which in a real game could easily be better for Black
than the book line. White's best appears to be at 2, but
then Black can dodge underneath to 3. With 5, Black has
a ko to save the 20 or so points that the top 4 Black stones
represent. But Black only risks about 4 points over the book
line above. Note that White has no internal ko threats.
White variation.
White 2 fails. Through 9, Black hangs onto the stones
at the top, and if necessary, makes a 2nd eye on the
middle right side.
