Does White have a ko threat?
Go World #2, Jul-Aug 1977, pp. 35-36
Solution follows
(or click here to download SGF)
Correct.
White 1 is a good ko threat.
Assuming that Black ignores White's ko threat with 2,
the follow up of White 3 succeeds.
If Black makes an eye in the corner with 4, White 5
puts Black in a shortage of liberties. Capturing
with Black 6 doesn't help. The standard throw-in of
White 7 kills Black!
White variation.
White must be careful, because White 3 fails.
Black 4 forces White to trade the original ko for this new ko.
Failure.
White 1 is not a ko threat.
Black 2 ignores the threat.
Connecting out with White 3 is too slow.
After Black forces with 4 and 6, Black lives.
